More About Mineral Paint Making
This painting was created using paint made from natural ingredients - charcoal from our fireplace, rocks from the creek, hikes, our backyard - each hand selected by me and my loved ones as we navigate through our days. Each color holds a memory.
To make the paint, I take the ingredients through a process of hammering, grinding with a mortar and pestle, sifting, separating out the heavier pieces using water, straining through a coffee filter, and finally drying out the material under the sun. When it is time to paint, the pigment is mixed with walnut oil or an acrylic medium and the hue comes to life.
The paints I used to make the painting are as important as the image at hand. The earth speaks through them in ways I could not have planned, nor can I take credit for.
